Identifying Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are small apple-seed-shaped pests with six legs and reddish-brown bodies. Additionally, while their bodies are flat before feeding on blood while feeding, their bodies will swell up and turn to a deep reddish-purple color. Although they are small, bed bugs are not invisible.
The means by which bed bugs travel is by crawling into unsuspecting people’s belongings. This allows them to sneak into various establishments and homes undetected until it is too late. Because of this, bed bugs are often referred to as blood-sucking hitchhikers. Unfortunately, bed bugs can be picked up just about anywhere there is a high volume of people including lodging establishments, transportation hubs, or any other establishment that has a lot of people coming and going on a daily basis. While you can and should exercise caution while in these bed bug hotspots, it’s not all that easy to prevent bed bugs from crawling into your belongings.
Bed bugs derive their name from the fact that once they gain access to a home, they will often reside inside of mattresses or box springs. This is because bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and are nocturnal. As such, mattresses provide them with easy access to sleeping humans upon whom they can feed. Additionally, while bed bugs may start out around a bed, they will spread to other areas of a home if they are not dealt with in a timely manner.
Signs Of A Bed Bug Infestation
Given the size of bed bugs (small but not invisible), the first sign of a bed bug infestation is often the appearance of bite marks on your skin. This is especially true if these bite marks appear after sleeping in your bed. Bed bug bites leave itchy red welts, often in straight lines. In addition to the appearance of bite marks on your body, some other signs of a bed bug infestation include:
- Bloodstains on your sheets, pillowcases, or upholstered furniture.
- Rust-like stains from bed bug excrement on your sheets, pillowcases, or upholstered furniture.
- A musty odor emanating from around your bed or other areas bed bugs are known to hide.
- Shed bed bug exoskeletons around your bedding.
If you notice any of these signs or bite marks on your body, you are most likely dealing with a bed bug infestation.
